ATO guidelines for self-funded training

09.05.08

Contract business analysts rarely get funded by their employers when it comes to training – and what about permanent staff who want training and are prepared to pay out of their own pocket? Did you know the Australian Tax Office is very supportive of training when it’s related to your profession?

As at May 2008, this is what the ATO web site says about self-funded education expenses:

Where a self-development course includes modules that can be directly related to a person’s income earning activities, a tax deduction can be claimed. The amount of the deduction will be determined by the extent to which the course is directly related to their current income earning activities.
